Our Program Has Local Roots

Herbal Education & Land Stewardship Through Community Partnerships

We work cooperatively with the following local businesses & organizations to bring you many of Albuquerque Herbalism’s classes & free events:

 

  • The Old School -a community educational program based in sustainable life-skills, helped to establish the Albuquerque Herbalism program.
  • The Source–wellness center offering a variety of natural healthcare services, provides a home for the Albuquerque Herbalism program.
  • City of Albuquerque Open Space— offering educational workshops and events, managing public lands, and partnering with us to make The Yerba Mansa Project possible. Thanks to everyone who came out for our previous FREE specialty classes sponsored by Open Space since 2014 including: Kitchen Herbs for Garden, Food, and Health; Wild About Weeds; Traditional Herbs of New Mexico; the Summer Series Wild Herb Walk; a Native Plant Walk at the Traditions Garden; Medicinal Herbs for Abq Gardens, and more.
  • Plant Healer — a quarterly herbalism journal published out of New Mexico by Kiva Rose and Jesse Wolf Hardin. Offering a multitude of herbal articles, formulas, and art work by herbalists from all over the country including regularly appearing essays from Albuquerque Herbalism Instructor Dara Saville. Dara is also an instructor at the annual Plant Healer Conference.
  • University of New Mexico Continuing Education–furthering the education of our community with a wide range of classes and programs. Dara offers an Ecological Herbalism series in the Holistic Health Program.
  • United Plant Savers: a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of medicinal plants and their habitats. United Plant Savers has published two of Dara’s articles in their annual Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation and made her International Herb Symposium session “Organizing and Implementing Native Medicinal Plant Restoration on Public Lands” freely accessable.
  • Native Plant Society of New Mexico: a non-profit organization that strives to educate the public about native plants. The state organization supports The Yerba Mansa Project with a grant awarded in 2017. Our Albuquerque Chapter has also hosted Dara’s free lectures Medicinal Plants of Central New Mexico, The Yerba Mansa Project: Community-Driven Restoration in the Bosque, and The Ecology of Herbal Medicine as well as ongoing free plant walks.
  • Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Public Library System- Our local libraries have sponsored some of our popular free community events including Medicinal Cannabis Education, Wild Food Foraging, Medicinal Plants for Albuquerque Gardens, and more.
  • Bernalillo County Open Space – managing public lands and offering free educational workshops including plant walks by Dara at Bachechi Open Space and other locations. Thanks also to those of you who have joined me at the ‘Traditional Plant Uses, Preparations, & Seed Saving Forum’.
  • Xeric Garden Club of Albuquerque- a non-profit organization that maintains demonstration gardens and provides free educational programs including Medicinal Plants for Albuquerque Gardens and The Ecology of Herbal Medicine offered by Dara.
  • Gutierrez-Hubbell House–historic house and museum managed by Bernalillo County that serves as a symbol of the joining of colonial Spanish, Native, Mexican, and Anglo-American cultures. In 2016-2017 the Gutierrez-Hubbell House also hosted the exhibit Medicinal Plants of the Middle Rio Grande co-created by Dara and sponsored several of Dara’s free lectures on the topic.
  • Plants of the Southwest— a great local source to buy plants and seeds for your medicine garden. The Albuquerque location is a supporter of The Yerba Mansa Project through donated and discounted plants and has also hosted Albuquerque Herbalism’s free class ‘Medicinal Plants for the Southwest Garden’.
  • Slow Food Abq: part of a global movement, our local chapter aims to connect the community with food producers, learn about food issues, discover & preserve local food culture and rekindle the pleasure of eating. Slow Food Abq also sponsored our free community Urban Weed Walk.
  • The Herb Store: Visit the Nob Hill shop for anything you need to make your herbal remedies. Albuquerque Herbalism students receive a 10% discount.
  • Bear Canyon Estates: Independent senior living center offering a wide range of activities and programs for its residents including past classes with Albuquerque Herbalism.
  • Tortuga Gallery–is a local space for community, arts, and performance. Tortuga hosted our class Native Plant Medicine: Wild Herbs of New Mexico.
  • Mandy’s Farm–residence and services for individuals with disabilities inlcuding a year-long hands-on herbal education program ‘Everyday Wellness with Herbs’ offered by Dara for everyone at the farm.
  • Inspired Birth and Families — classes for natural parenting, including past Albuquerque Herbalism classes ‘Herbal Remedies Kids Love’ and ‘Herbal Baby: Products for Sensitive Skin’.
  • Rio Grande Community Farm— a non-profit urban farm growing organic food and offering educational workshops.  Thanks to everyone who came out for our FREE community class ‘Herbs for Albuquerque Gardens’ and to the kids that participated in the Summer Farm Camp’s salve-making class.
  • The Albuquerque Academy– Private school for students in grades 6 through 12 offering traditional classroom experiences as well as experiential learning and community programs including Albuquerque Herbalism’s field class at The Trail End Field Station in the Gila Wilderness.
  • New Mexico Sports and Wellness— Albuquerque’s premier fitness center hosted Albuquerque Herbalism’s class ‘Body Bliss’ at the Del Norte location.
