Invasive Plant Medicine

Class Details

Invasive plants infiltrate the local ecosystem, adapt quickly, and refuse to ‘play nice’ with native species. They often have gnarly roots and emit poison so that others cannot grow near them. Though they are easily vilified, the fact is that they also flourish in spaces that have been left barren due to land mismanagement practices that are rooted in problematic social policies and beliefs. In this class, we will learn how to identify and make medicinal relationships with the ‘bad guys’ of the Southwest. We will delve deep into the backstories of why we often treat ‘invasive’ and ‘bad’ as synonymous. We will come to understand that even the most problematic species play an important community role in the ecosystem and never come empty handed. Though they have figurative thorns, invasive species are also deeply generous. We will learn how to transform these gifts into medicines that support the human body in healing and overall wellness.
