Xochitl: Cosmology of Mexican Curanderismo

Mexico and New Mexico have a long and rich history of traditional medicine or curanderismo. This class focuses on the Mexica cosmology that informs many of the practices of herbal medicine in curanderismo. Xochitl is the Nahuatl word for flower and flowers are central to the cosmology of the Mexica. We will learn about Nauhcampa, or the Mexica worldview of the four directions or four petals of the universe. We will meet the divine Mexica energies, called teotl in Nahuatl, which include Tonantzin, Venerable Mother Earth, as well as the teotl of water, healing, cleansing and herbal medicine.

We will learn about the plant practices which evolved from this cosmovision including the ritual of the limpia. During class we will be guided in a self-limpia to bless and cleanse ourselves with plants.
